okay, here's how to fix the problem

the pen tool is VERY tricky. but once you've got the hang of it, its very easy.
its hard to describe exactly how to use it with just this comment.
but i'll try xD

click to start a point. then click to make another point. a straight line should appear. if you want to curve it, you can run your mouse over the line, until you see a little plus sign next to the pen tool icon assigned to your mouse. click, hold Ctrl, and drag to create a curve. then you can continue with the path until you've created the shape you've wanted to create.
then you can either make that path into a stroke, or fill it, or even make it into a selection. right-click over the path, and those options will be shown. you can figure a lot of it out from there. if you want to make it into a cool stroke with some texture to it, you can choose the option of "stimulate pressure". that option is really cool for making hair (the technique I use to do it, at least).
what else...you can also click and drag to create unique curvatures.

oh, and when you do stroke path, you can change the media from which the path is made. i most commonly use the brush tool. which means it takes the current size, shape, and color set to the brush tool and applies it in the stroke.

there's so much you can do with the pen tool. it comes in handy so often. if there's any more you'd like to know, just tell me
